Eye care
Optometrist and ophthalmologist
Two distinct professions. Here is which one you need.
An optometrist is the front-line eye-health professional. They examine the eyes, prescribe glasses and lenses, screen for and treat a range of eye diseases, and prescribe certain medications. They also handle pre- and post-operative follow-up for vision surgery. Optometrists are governed by the Ordre des optométristes du Québec.
An ophthalmologist is a medical specialist. They take on the more complex cases and perform surgery: advanced glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, corneal ulcers, eyelid disease.
The two work together. Your optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmologist if your condition needs specialist care — and the ophthalmologist will often rely on your optometrist for follow-up.
